Welcome to 2021
We are looking forward to another busy and successful year in Maths at MHS.
Last year saw further changes to our classrooms and new opportunities for students to engage, learn and build their confidence in Mathematics. All maths classrooms now cater for flexible learning, with students encouraged to work collaboratively using whiteboards, desks and sometimes even the windows.
Our students again achieved great growth in NAPLAN and did us proud in the Australian Maths Competition, ANU Maths Day and Regional Maths Day. We continue to have students achieve excellent results in all courses in the HSC, including the Extension 1 and Extension 2 courses.
The LAMP, Extension, Accelerated and Primary School Programs will continue and expand this year. Our gifted and talented programs will grow to include the acceleration of more students in Years 7 to 12 and also Year 6 students from our local primary schools will have the opportunity to extend and accelerate before they join us in Year 7. We will be holding an information evening early this term for interested parents and students.
The Maths faculty will again be running free Maths tuition and provide a range of opportunities for all our students through a variety of activities and excursions.
As always, please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns throughout the year.
All classrooms now have whiteboards and blackboards for students to work on and standup furniture in some classrooms.
The aim is to increase engagement, productivity, student centred learning and peer tutoring.
Research has shown that standing up improves our ability to think and collaborate, and you burn more calories too!
The Literacy and Mathematics Program (LAMP) will continue, with approximately 80 students from Years 7 to 10 participating during roll call each day.
This program addresses the literacy aspects in mathematics to improve numeracy outcomes for students.
The focus for Term 1 will be decoding the literacy in NAPLAN questions.
Year 6 Mathematics Program
Moruya High continues to work closely with primary schools to support Year 6 students in their transition to high school mathematics.
The 2019 program will consist of a Mathematics Teacher visiting the primary schools throughout the year, to work with students on developing key numeracy skills in preparation for high school.
Gifted and talented students will participate in Extension Maths and STEM days, to be held at the high school throughout the year. In addition, they will have the opportunity to extend and accelerate while in Year 6 this year. For students who enrol at Moruya High, they will continue to have access to this program from Years 7 to 12 and increase their options to complete the Extension 1 and Extension 2 HSC courses, which are fully catered for at MHS. We will be holding an information evening early in term 1 to provide more information for interested parents and students.
Extension and Accelerated Maths Programs
Students will continue to participate in extension programs, through LAMP, before school lessons, regional maths days and national competitions.
We have a number of our students who are accelerated and are working a year ahead of their cohort in Maths. This provides them with ongoing opportunities to expand their mathematical knowledge and options to complete their Maths HSC exams before Year 12.
Free Senior Maths Tutoring
Free after school tutorials for Year 11 and 12 students continue this year. These are held on Tuesday afternoons from 3:15 to 4:30 in D2.
Bring some maths and come along. This is a great opportunity to get assistance with classwork and homework, or to prepare for tests!
Senior students can access their Maths work on moodle via the school website.
This provides 24 hour access to important information and assistance for class work, homework, assessment tasks and exams.
Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.
